Using Advanced Search Queries
Any combination of search operators can be combined to form an advanced search query. For example, the following query can
be used to find video records about academy awards for best actor, excluding the videos about best supporting actor:
"academy awards" actor
-supporting |
Finds all records that contain the exact phrase 'academy awards' and the word 'actor' but not the word 'supporting'. |
Similarly, to find all video records about either Hurricane Katrina or Hurricane Ivan, the following queries can be used:
"hurricane katrina" OR "hurricane ivan" |
Finds all records that contain either the phrase 'hurricane katrina' or the phrase 'hurricane ivan'. |
hurricane katrina OR ivan |
Finds all records that contain the word 'hurricane' and either of the two words' katrina' or 'ivan'. |
Note that, for advanced search queries, the order of the query terms can influence the search results. Specifically, 'OR'
operators are always evaluated before 'AND' operators. Consequently, a query like 'typhoon mary OR hurricane ivan' will find
all records that contain either the word 'mary' or 'hurricane' and both of the words 'typhoon' and 'ivan'. If you are looking
for video on either 'typhoon mary' or 'hurricane ivan', a better query would be '"typhoon mary" OR "hurricane ivan"'.
Search operators can be combined with modifiers, filters and sorters to perform targeted searches that return only the videos that
you want. Some examples are listed below.
madonna channel:mtv sort:mostPopular |
Finds the most
popular MTV videos that contain the word 'madonna'. |
tag:baseball channel:espn OR channel:"AOL sports" |
Finds all ESPN or AOL Sports videos that are tagged 'baseball'. |

Finds tonyterabit's most recent video favorites in the category 'news' sorted by recency. |
"world series" title:"red sox" -description:cardinals bitrate:>200 |
Finds all videos that contain the phrase 'world series', have the phrase 'red sox' in the title, do
not contain the word 'cardinals' in the description and have a bitrate that is at least 200 Kbps. |

Finds all videos that contain either of the words 'hurricane' or 'typhoon' in their
description, have a runtime longer than 10 minutes and have a category of 'news'. |
